Sodality Of The Five Holy Wounds...

The Sodality of the Five Holy Wounds held a Missa Cantata at Our Lady of the Rosary, Blackfen on Friday. The Friday after the Third Sunday in Lent is traditionally the Feast of the Five Holy Wounds, which I hadn't realised before.

The unfamiliarity with this Feast meant that there was a bit of a query as to the liturgical colour in the Sacristy before Mass...

The Mass itself was beautifully sung. It was known as the Golden Mass, revealed to Pope Boniface II in 532AD and believed to have been composed by St. John the Evangelist himself.

I only took a few photos, and they can be seen on my Flickr page. The dates and times of future meetings are to be confirmed, but if you want to join the Sodality, you can keep an eye on events by checking out the Sodality blog. More information about the Sodality and its Constitutions can be found there too.

The old calendar (this is from an 1891 hand missal) provided a focus for Lenten preparation by going through Christ's suffering for us. Mass each Friday and a short homily would give a structure for prayer and meditation.

Friday after Septuagesima is the Prayer of Our Lord Jesus Christ; after Sexagesima, the Most Holy Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ; after Quinquagesima, the Most Holy Crown of Thorns.

Friday after the first Sunday of Lent is the Most Holy Spear and Nails; after the Second, the Holy Winding Sheet; after the Third, the Five Sacred Wounds; after the Fourth, the Most Precious Blood; and after the Fifth Passion Sunday), the Seven Sorrows of the BVM.

A variation from the above,

From the Antiphonale 1912 (Roman Rite)

Tuesday After Septuagesima: Prayer of Our Lord.
Tuesday After Sexagesima: Passion of our Lord.
Tuesday After Quinquagesima: The Sacred Column.
Friday After Ash Wednesday: The most Holy Crown of Thorns.
Then as above...
These Feasts have full Offices for them including Hymns. These Feasts can also be found in the Sarum books, and there is at least one Sequence...

One of these years we should revive all these Masses

How tragic that Sodalities have fallen by the wayside of parish life.

How many now would even know what one was talking about.
