The End Is Nigh...

Time is definitely running out.

Monday sees the start of the new term for me... why is it that the first question anyone asks a teacher on holiday is "When do you go back?" No matter how much one enjoys teaching, the holidays are a definite bonus, and not to be wished away!

To add insult to injury, I now have a stinking cold: a throat made of sandpaper, golf-ball sized neck glands, feeling cold, (well, colder than usual) streaming eyes and a blocked, but simultaneously streaming, nose.

I want sympathy.

And alcohol.

I think I want more sympathy than alcohol, but it's a fine line...

Sympathy I can manage by email; alcohol is more complex - OK, I know Ocado or Tesco Direct, or someone like that can help; but I'm not sure that 'Mulier Fortis, Blackfen' would be an adequate address, and in any case I don't think they work that quickly, at least at this hour of night !

Seriously, it always happens like this, doesn't it ? . . . and it stinks.

For what it's worth, you are in my thoughts, and will be in my prayers; and in particular will be my Intention at Compline tonight and tomorrow.

Get well soon, and save the decent booze until you're feeling better; don't waste the Malt on a bad throat; Dewars will do !

Ah, 'tis sympathy you'll be needin'! True, true... The cure never fails. Take tablets of aspirin 'til your ears begin to ring and then "Paddy" fine Irish Whiskey until the ringin' stops. Never fails for me...

I thought the blanket had Disney characters at first, but it must be the water I was drinkin'. Some kind of moon things, or something...

Dewars! Sacrilege!

I don't think that alcohol can be piped over the internet yet (but then I haven't read the BBC's "Click" pages for a few months), but you certainly have my sympathy! Saying "Get Well Soon" would be useless as colds, treated or untreated, tend to hang around for a week - but hope you can keep the symptoms at bay. It's probably too late to buy shares in Kimberly-Clark.

Sorry, D.V. - not being from the Emerald Isle myself, I don't have the default setting of Whiskey (as opposed to Whisky), and a friend's father was Head Blender at Dewars !

However, Mac, if you'd prefer something Irish, I'm sure that could be arranged.

1 cup boiling water, 3 fingers of blended whisky (no reason to waste a dose of pure malt on this - you probably can't taste anything, anyway), orange slice, 3-6 cloves stuck into the rind of the orange, honey.

Combine and consume.

Repeat as necessary/practicable.

While I am quite sure you were already aware of the hot whisky, and also of the hot whisky's medicinal virtues, you may not have known it under its other name: the print journalist's breakfast.

Get well!

Mac, I'm so sorry to hear you've picked up this stinker at the beginning of term. I was going to contact you anyway with my prayers and good wishes for that. Now I add my sympathy. Feel cherished by all your blogging friends and get better soon....and don't fall for that guilt thing and go in tomorrow if you're not well enough.
When's the next holiday?!
God bless

My heartfelt sympathies - both for your feeling unwell and for the fact that it's coincided with the beginning of term - a double whammy, eh?

I hope you follow some of the good advice regarding the taking of alcoholic beverages - all strictly medicinal, of course :0)

Mac;

hopefully you feel a great deal better now; although on second thoughts perhaps those cats are sending a message about how you feel !

However, hopefully it will make you feel a little bettter that the Preces at LH Vespers tonight (those in the Divine Office aren't the same, sadly !) prayed :

Qui in sinu Virginis Mariae humanitatis et divinitatis mysticum es conubium operatus - benedic virgines caelesti tibi Sponso consecratus.

I just love that imagery !

Sorry Dominic Mary - my Latin is pretty minimal at the best of times (and right now I feel like death... I made the mistake of going in to school today... though I won't be making that mistake tomorrow!) so what does the prayer mean?
