Perhaps by not hearing your car the kittens were a tad disoriented and thought that you'd gone gallivanting again.
Animals do seem to have a built-in timer as they always seem to be around for the daily homecoming.
And, of course they love you. We all love you!
Kitties are sociable creatures. And they do get very attached to people!
Our former vet used to say that cats were always grateful when you did something to help them - dogs were never grateful (in his considerable experience). So I'm quite sure that your cats do love you....in their own way.
