No Smoking In Church...

Along with other public buildings, churches in England are legally required to put up "No Smoking" signs. No-one has declared a "No smoking-thuribles" policy... yet... though reading about the latest research on the effects of incense suggest that this will soon be on the cards.

Anyway, I shall suggest to Fr. Tim that he consider using the following variant on the "No Smoking" sign...

Mantilla twitched in the direction of the Ironic Catholic.

No, what the government is really afraid of is that there will remain some last tiny corner of private life they haven't yet made a regulation for. There might be one little smidgen of our society in which good manners and civil behavior is simply the expected norm that no one would dream of violating, some tiny corner in which people are expected to behave well and which is policed by our sense of commmon civility.

Frankly, I do not believe for a second that any member of "the government" gives a rats ass if every one of us dies of lung cancer. That's now what all of this is about.

If you really have to put the sign up....it *should* be that one!

What is the actual text of the law?

Fantastic sign. He should definitely use it!

I agree with Hilary! (though I am currently "off" the fags)

I've been tempted for some time to take up smoking (more than I already do) for political reasons. I decided quite a while ago, however, that the only way to really make a difference is to limit one's protest puffs to three locations:

Hospital waiting rooms

kindergartens

the offices of our public representatives.

Go Hilary!

Is this not a perfect law to ignore? What are they going to do? Prosecute? We should ignore their efforts and see if they dare to get heavy handed. Why should the law mock us? Is this law not part of a mindset by which the government suffocates us? Why should we play their game?

I know the law is the law. I know the rule of law is an awesome treasure. But laws like this do more damage to the rule of law than ignoring them. Parliament needs a reminder that law is meant to serve the person.

I confess I am making no sense. I am irritated.

We Baptists don't smoke in the church either. But it seems you can always find a puff party taking place in the church parking lot, somewhere . . .

Love the sign!
