Fun & Games...

Last August, I bought some flat-pack bookcases. The book situation has gotten steadily worse, despite a vicious cull followed by several trips to the local charity shop and/or rubbish dump (sorry, "refuse & recycling centre" !)

Anyway, a friend offered to come round and help me tackle the cases. I now have four of these:

Blogging may be light for the next day or two as I try and tidy up a little...

don't forget to get bookends so you can put more books on top too. Or do you prefer the "stack" method?" ;-D

Now, the books problem ....

I have some floor-to-ceiling IKEA, open design book shelves. A few months ago, I set about trying to do a cull. Instead of doing any culling, I realised the shelves were wide enough to allow me to put two rows of books on each shelf...

It doubled my capacity in one go, but hunting for a particular book I want is now a bit of an adventure - creating a gap in the "front row" and shuffling the gap along the shelf until the required book in the "back row" appears in the gap.

Enjoy! ;-)

Noooooo, this is definitely NOT Schadenfreude :-)

These look like the IKEA 'Billy' range.

If you are placing two or more bookcases side by side then there are some special joining screws to make the set safer and more rigid.

These are available free from Customer Services but they don't advertise them! If you need any please let me know as I have several spare sets.

Four Divine Offices? That's a bit keen, Mac - or did you just need three spare for when you lose them in amongst all the others?

Joe - I have realised that for many of my smaller books, I have the space to do just that. Unfortunately, I really HATE being unable to see what books I have. It leads to double purchases...

La mamma - ok, ok... it's three volumes of the Divine Office (I say the Novus Ordo one, mea culpa!) and an Old Rite Missal. Happy now??
;-D

3 vols? How come yours is 3 and mine is 4?

For you people who put two rows of books per shelf...here's a semi-solution ... see if you can find
a board about an inch thick half as wide or not quite half as wide as the shelf...then put it towards the back so the books in the back row have the top edge showing -- and put the books less likely to be used back there.

The UK edition of the LOTH is printed in 3 volumes; the North American edition is in 4 volumes.

I understand that the UK edition is also a somewhat better translation. My personal opinion, based on long experience with the NA version, is that this would not be difficult.

I got the case from the Catholic Truth Society Bookshop in Victoria - they ordered it for me.
