Following the witness shown in Poland and Ireland recently, a group of lay people in the UK decided to try and organise a similar day of pilgrimage and prayer for the re-flourishing of our Faith, for the grace to build a culture of Life and for true Peace to reign in the hearts of all peoples and nations.
You can find out more about the initiative on the website.
Thanet, that small pimple on the easternmost end of Kent, had two pilgrimage locations being organised - and I was delighted that Margate (led by Fr. Timothy Finigan, Parish Priest of St. Austin & St. Gregory, Margate, with St. Anne, Cliftonville) was one of them (the other was Ramsgate).
We gathered on the King's Steps at 2:45pm. Sadly, despite having truly awesome weather last weekend, today was much more typically April weather. It was cold, and very wet... I have no idea where the wind was actually coming from, but it felt as if it had started somewhere in Iceland and had picked up speed along the way...
We chanted the Litany of Loreto (in Latin) as we walked in procession from the King's Steps down to the Main Sands...
...and then we prayed the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, the Prayer to St. Michael, the Consecration to our Lady and a few other prayers, but not necessarily in that order... I was cold, wet, and my fingers were turning an interesting shade of blue as I had been asked to take photos and my phone doesn't seem to respond when I'm wearing gloves. In addition, I had forgotten to bring gloves. I'd also forgotten to bring a hat and scarf (did I mention the wind?) The conditions certainly added to the penitential feel of the devotions!
The seagulls were all lined up on the sand... I wasn't sure if they were hunkered down and having a bit of a rest from the wind and waves, or if they were keeping an eye on the interesting bunch of people who might suddenly produce a picnic hamper...
I thought it was a wonderful initiative, and do hope that it will become an annual event... though maybe arranged for a Sunday in July...
Lovely for Our Lady despite the weather!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and God bless!
ReplyDeleteWhat a magnificent turn-out in such
ReplyDeleteinclement weather.
Many congratulations to all the True Catholics who ventured forth into stormy waters.
God Bless Fr. Timothy Finigan and all his hardy Parishioners.
And the intrepid photographer with no hat, nor scarf, nor gloves. But an excellent camera which produced memorable photographs.
Unto the next Rosary Crusade upon Margate's Sands, when one would hope to attend (wearing Wet Weather Gear).
