The United States military has developed a new weapon: a heat-ray gun which can work from a distance of 500 metres. It apparently penetrates clothes and heats up the skin to about 50°C and was being described as making people think their clothes were about to catch fire.
This high energy beam was also described as harmless...
...yeah, right!
I'm getting very disturbed by all this. It's not a combat weapon, it's crowd control. Not a good sign.
ReplyDeleteIf my calculations are correct, (double and add 30)
ReplyDeletethat's 130 degrees F.
How could that not be harmful?
120 degrees is the maximum for hot water. Any hotter and you risk burns if you stay under it more than 5 seconds. So getting hit by that heat ray would hurt, but not kill if you ran fast enough.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, I want one.
Heating the atoms and molecules in your skin to that temperature is unlikely to be good for them!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it does look pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteOn a more serious note, it is to hoped that this weapon can be used as a non-lethal way of dealing with rioters, for example. I'm sorry if there are some people think that it's in bad taste for me to mention this, but it's better to hurt people without killing them or injuring them than it is to shoot them dead. (Think about Amritsar or Northern Ireland, or even the police shooting in Gothenburg in 2001. Let's hope this new gadget can put an end to that sort of thing.)
